Our Neuromodulation business is an area of expertise for Abbott. This business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. Our Solutions include Proclaim (TM) XR SCS System, the #1 Spinal cord stimulator on the market, Proclaim (TM) DRG Neurostimulator, the only FDA approved DRG therapy and a market leader in radiofrequency ablation therapy, Abbott RFA.  These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. Our deep brain stimulation technology for progressive diseases help people manage their Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor symptoms, steering away from side effects.

Our location in Plano, TX currently has an opportunity for a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer.


  • Function as a central mechanical engineering expert within and across business units

  • Conceptualize and implements product solutions using innovative mechanical design principals

  • Create novel design solutions that expand the business’s intellectual property

  • Evaluate intellectual property and technology development opportunities

  • Work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to solves difficult technical issues with a methodical, data-driven approach

  • Lead engineering team through demonstrated technical excellence and implementation of engineering best practices

  • Ensure that program objectives are determined and met, and logistics are effectively coordinated

  • Exhibit and instills decision-making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)

  • Identify, communicates, and mitigates project risks

  • Ensure executional compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulations

  • Lead technical reviews and design reviews or acts as an independent reviewer

  • Develop team through mentorship, training, and adoption of development best practices

  • Build and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally

  • Maintain best in class, expert knowledge in current and novel technologies across the field of active implantable devices

  • Provide influence and contributes to engineering excellence in the field of neuromodulation

  • Engage teams within Abbott and across the field of active implantable devices to utilize the latest technology and expertise across the business

  • Engage with industry regulators (FDA, BSI, etc.) to explain novel designs or technical analysis in support of device submissions

  • Contribute to external technical committees (ISO, EN, etc.) as a representative of Abbott



  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent . Advanced degree preferred

  • 10+ years of relevant product development or R&D experience.

  • Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing, etc.)

  • Experience designing for relevant manufacturing processes (e.g. biocompatible material selection, printed circuit board fabrication, machining, injection molding, extrusion, metal forming, welding)

  • Demonstrated history of product innovation (e.g. diverse portfolio of patents resulting in novel marketed products)

  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (Solidworks/Pro-E)

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of sound design principles and practices

  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management techniques and root cause investigation

  • Experience working on joint technical forums/councils in the development of industry standards

  • Experience applying statistical techniques to inform design decisions (e.g. Design for Six Sigma, Design for Manufacturability)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical device design controls (21 CFR Part 820) and project management


  • Medical device industry experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with with implantable hardware preferred

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred
